Topic: Be Careful!
Text: 1 Corinthians 10: 12
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! Amen
When travelling or just driving around town, we commonly come across signs such as: 2Km to Point B, 100m to gas station, 5 Blocks to Mall and the likes, just to mention but a few.
How easy it would have been if along life’s path too, we came across sign posts such as; 10 Km to hell, 1 more act of faithfulness to Heaven, 1 more soul to be won to get a crown, and the likes. The reality is we can never get it this way.
A ‘standing’ Christian is one who has cultivated the habit of spending quality time with God in order to know His will and please Him always. This Christian does not joke with his/her prayer and Bible study times. He is quick to witness to others whenever the opportunity arrives, and he does not make up excuses to stay away from the gathering of the brethren (church); he is simply consumed with the zeal for the Lord. Anytime we find reason to drift away from any of these, we are not far from ‘falling’.
Backsliding always takes place gradually until one day, one looks back and sees how far away from the Lord he/she has drifted. In the verses before 1 Corinthians 10:12, the Apostle was highlighting some of the things the people of old did that did not please God, such as idolatry, sexual immorality, grumbling and testing God.
The truth is, per our human nature, it is always easy to get a false sense of purity and justify ourselves as pure, when for instance, we do not bow down to idols. Unfortunately, this is the one common state of mind that has seen many take their focus off Christ.
It is for this and other misconceptions that God admonishes us through His Word, that if we think we stand firm, then we should be careful that we do not fall! Begin to pray and ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to order your steps so that you will stand firm for Christ always!
