Today’s Devotion
Topic: Finally! (7th Statement)
Text: Luke 23: 46
Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. Amen
This is the last statement our Lord Jesus made on the cross before He died. It was not the cry of being conquered by death, but of conquering death itself. Jesus committed His true human soul to God.
If He had not come down to be in flesh, and be made susceptible to the laws of nature, Jesus may not have had human understanding, will, emotions and affections. Indeed, He could not have proved how possible it was for man (mortals) to live for God (divinity). It was His “humaness” that attracted the devil to tempt Him. And He showed us to overcome him by the Word.
It is not strange that Jesus was presenting His Spirit to the Father. That was not the first time or thing He was commending to God. Throughout His life and ministry, Jesus never did anything on His own. He committed His every action to the father first; even the bread He ate.
Someday, mortal as we are, we shall present our souls back to our Maker and will be accountable for what we did with it. The number 1 question we need to ask is if our souls will be pleasing to God and received as one that has fulfilled His will? Meditate on this!
Till then, let us like Jesus, commit all our ways, aspirations, dreams, hopes and plans to God in prayer. Trusting Him to be able to keep us from falling. Also, may the spirit who rose Jesus from the dead, on this Resurrection Sunday, quicken your mortal body to do exploits in Jesus name. Jesus Christ Risen- He’s Risen Indeed! See you at church today.
