Topic: She Took Notice Of Him
Text: Gen 39: 6b- 7.
6b Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” Amen.
When Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guards, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. The Lord was with Joseph such that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, he put Joseph in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. The Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, BECAUSE YOU ARE HIS WIFE. HOW THEN COULD I DO SUCH A WICKED THING AND SIN AGAINST GOD?”
Beloved let us pray for the “young man Joseph”. This lustful adulteress has set her eyes on him and won’t stop till both, or either of them fall. So far, she has proven stubborn to any form of reasoning to let the young man continue his work without her constant harassments.
Brethren, is it not very sad to know that there are several ladies and gentlemen who find themselves in Joseph’s position as we discuss? Some perverse boss, lecturer, pastor, colleague or friend has taken notice of how beautiful, handsome or intelligent they are, and will not cease lusting after them till they have had them in bed.
The victims of sexual harassment may just be ordinary people, workers, students, house helps, relatives and colleagues going about their lives and duties. Yet some lustful people won’t let them be. They are harassed day and night, till some of them compromise and give in. The few who wouldn’t give in, but ran away like Joseph did, are framed up and made to feel miserable.
Reflect on this word and pray for all who find themselves in Joseph’s position. Ask that the grace of God will help them continue fleeing youthful lust till marriage (2 Tim 2:22). Pray also that the Holy Spirit continues to empower them to say NO to anyone enticing them to sin.
For those like Portiphar’s wife who take advantage of their position of influence to victimize others to bed, pray that grace will touch them into repentance; because the day is coming soon when all men/women must account for their deeds before the Creator. On that day, many will gnash their teeth who are found wanting. You’d see!
