Topic: Serve And Serve Well!
Text: Gen 18: 2- 10
2. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. 3. He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. 4. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.
5. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way —now that you have come to your servant.” “Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.” 6. So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.” 7. Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.
8. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. 9. “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he said. 10. Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Amen
The body of Christ may just be losing our christianity unconsciously. We seem to have focused our attention on demons, witches, anointing oils, miracles and neglected the basic spiritual truths in the bible whose practice command life time blessings. One of such principles found in the bible is TO SERVE OTHERS AND TO SERVE WELL TOO.
Abraham was an already established and successful man taking rest in front of his own tent when he saw three men standing nearby. Remember they were angels, but appeared to him as ordinary men. Cooling off from the heat in the comfort of his own home, you’d agree that this is certainly not the ideal situation to motivate service, especially to strangers.
However read the passage again and observe how Abraham humbled himself so low to these “strangers” and urged them in to be served. He HURRIED to his dear wife and urged her to QUICKLY get them food from the FINEST flour. He also RUN to the herd to select a tender calf and urged his servants to HURRIEDLY prepare it. As the “strangers” ate, he stood near them under a tree waiting on them.
All this time, the 3 “strangers” were observing him. No wonder they blessed Abraham with his GREATEST HEART DESIRE before they left. They declared that Sarah will conceive inspite of her advanced age. Abraham served “strangers” he was not obliged to serve, and he served them well.
This generation does not have an idea when it comes to serving. Young people can’t loose a little of themselves to be used by God for the benefit and blessing of others. We are full of “ego” and see service as demeaning and unattractive. We resist any authority or discipline that seeks to instill a sense of service in us.
We would rather chat and follow others on social media than to spend real time serving the precious people God brings our way. So we have become shallow, uninspired and quite naive with misguided priorities and no real sense of purpose.
Meditate on this word and pray. Serving, like giving and diligence, commands so much blessings for those who practice it. They catch the attention of both God and man and draw several favours and opportunities their way. Ask God for love, wisdom and humility. These virtues make serving easier than usual. Your next miracle may not be in the bottle of anointing oil you keep buying after all, but how you serve and respect the people around you, even the undeserving.
