Topic: Every Step With The Lord!

Text: Genesis 24: 12

Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.” Amen.

Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. He said to the senior servant in his household; the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh. I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”

So the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor. He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water. Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

Beloved, it’s a new year and we are grateful to God for His mercies that has brought us this far. Though we have made the new year, we barely know what the details of each day will entail; but God does. And that is the more reason why we must learn to walk with Him every step of the journey.

Abraham’s senior servant demonstrated a wonderful example that should guide our steps through the new year and beyond.

a) He made sure he understood the mission ahead. From verse 5-9, we see that he inquired from Abraham, details about this special task assigned to him. Now, being believers, some of us are workers, others unemployed; some students, while others are retired. Each of us needs to have an idea of what those statutory events in the year and general expectations ought to be. For instance, students already know if this is the year they are to write their finals or not. Some youth, per their planning, already know this is the year they intend to get married. Those applying for new jobs also already know what their expectations are.

b) He prayed. He asked the Lord to give Him success on his quest. We must also make this a daily prayer; that the Lord guides us and blesses the works of our hands with success.

c) He strategically positioned himself. He settled near the well knowing that the maidens will come and fetch water from that well around that time. For all the exams we hope to pass this year, we must study diligently. For  promotion in the office, we must be efficient with both our task and the task of the position we aspire to hold.

d) He had patience to observe Rebecca just to confirm whether it was his prayers being answered. According to verse 8, ‘Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.’ Child of God, you will need patience even when a manifestation looks just as you asked God for. You know that when we rush through our decisions, we make a lot of mistakes that sometimes cost us heavily. Wait for confirmation from God. Always trust Him to show up with the best answers and results.

Begin to pray now and commit all the plans and aspirations you have for the new year to God. He surely knows what paths are best for you and He knows how to get you there. Do your part by honouring Him and sticking with Him. You’ll surely be a success and God will make your life a beautiful one in this new year!
