Topic: “Destiny Helpers”
Text: 1 Samuel 9: 8
The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.” Amen
There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish. He had a son named Saul; an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites — a head taller than any of the others. One day, the donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.”
So he did, picking one of the servants with him, they searched far and wide for three days to no avail. Then Saul said to his servant, “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying about us.” But the servant replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God; he is highly respected, and everything he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take.”
Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?” The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.” “Good,” Saul said to his servant. “Come, let’s go.” So they set out for the town where the man of God was.
As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some girls coming out to draw water, and they asked them, “Is the seer here?” “He is,” they answered. “He’s ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to our town today, for the people have a sacrifice at the high place. As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time.”
They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place. Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked on my people, for their cry has reached me.”
When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.” Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?” “I am the seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up ahead of me to the high place, for today you are to eat with me, and in the morning I will send you on your way and will tell you all that is in your heart. As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire of Israel turned, if not to you and your whole family line?”
Saul answered, “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you say such a thing to me?”
Beloved, many have said there are “destiny-helpers” and they always pray for God to connect them to such people. However, as they do, they look up to the prominent and influential in society, saying to themselves, “if that man or woman heard my story or saw my application or proposal, then he or she will speak on my behalf to those who matter and usher me into my divine destiny”. Those who try this sometimes succeed, but many are those who get disappointed.
This is because the Jehovah who is the destiny-giver is also the ultimate destiny-helper and HE CAN USE ANYBODY AND ANYTHING TO ASSIST YOU TO BECOME WHO HE WANTS YOU TO BE. In the case of Saul, He used the missing donkeys and futile search for them to send Saul out of his comfort zone and to get his desire to connect with a man of God respectively. But that’s not all, the servant with Saul, it was he who suggested they see a man of God in the first place and offered to give his own money. He was just a servant, but God had prepared him to connect Saul to his destiny.
Then comes the young girls going to draw water. God had place them to help Saul to locate Samuel, and they even pressed on him, “GO UP NOW; YOU SHOULD FIND HIM BY THIS TIME.” The last person God had prepared to usher Saul into kingship was the Prophet Samuel himself. The man who had availed himself for God’s use from a tender age. He was the only one who knew Saul’s destiny because the Lord had revealed it to him and he finally ushered the young man into it.
Now, to confirm that all this was not a coincidence but God’s own design to make Saul king, see how Samuel mentioned the found donkeys when Saul had not even mentioned it. Beloved, by all means, pray for God to direct you with people He has prepared to assist you to fulfil your purpose, but stop looking unto some people at the ‘top’; you may just miss it. God can use anyone and anything at anytime; and yet all will bring you to the place where you truly belong.
Pray for patience, humility and sensitivity to the Spirit of God so that you don’t miss or despise the helpers God brings your way because they are not the type you had hoped or thought would be used by Him. Remember, all who are great were small before and all who will be great must learn to serve. Do not despise anybody in your life. Even if they can’t help your destiny today, they may help that of your children tomorrow.
