Faith in the Incarnate Son of God (Self Assessment 142)

Today’s Devotion

Topic: Faith in the Incarnate Son of God (Self Assessment 142)
Part 2
Background:

John 3: 16 explains how the love of God for this world compelled Him to give His only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in Him does not perish but have everlasting life.
Last week, we learned that our faith in Jesus as the Son of God overcomes the world. Our belief in God should make us believe in Christ Jesus too as God’s only begotten Son. Still exploring the first epistle of John, today’s Bible study seeks to further go back to the basis and discuss the mystery of the incarnation of the Son of God, and the eternal blessings there are for each of us who chooses to believe in Him.
Kindly gather the entire family together, it’s time to study the Word.
Text: 1 John 5: 6 – 12
6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. Amen
Questions:

i. What does it mean for John to say in verse 6 that Jesus came by water and blood?
ii. Who does John refer to as the Spirit, the water and the blood? Moreover, what is the significance of these three agreeing in their testimony about Jesus?
iii. Read verse 9 again. Whose testimony about Jesus Christ should we believe, and why? How important is this to our Christian walk?
iv. According to verse 10, ‘Whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about His Son.’ What is the import of making God out as a liar? What effect can this have on our walk with Him?
v. What is God’s testimony about His Son Jesus? (vrs 11 & 12) What does this mean to you as a child of God?
vi. Verse 12 states that ‘whoever has the Son has life’. How can anyone “have” the Son: what must they do to have Him?
vii. Beloved, do you “have” the Son? If yes, how did you come to “have” Him? If no, what do you intend to do?
viii. In your own words, please tell us who Jesus Christ is to you. You can cite scriptures to support your belief in Him.
