Topic: “You’re Very Crafty”, They Think!
Text: 1 Samuel 23: 19- 23
19 The Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah, south of Jeshimon? 20 Now, Your Majesty, come down whenever it pleases you to do so, and we will be responsible for giving him into your hands.”
21 Saul replied, “The Lord bless you for your concern for me. 22 Go and get more information. Find out where David usually goes and who has seen him there. They tell me he is very crafty. 23 Find out about all the hiding places he uses and come back to me with definite information. Then I will go with you; if he is in the area, I will track him down among all the clans of Judah.” Amen
Yesterday, we learnt from David the importance of seeking the counsel of God in all things and not simply that of man. King Saul listened to his informants to know where David was, and David also did same to know the activities of Saul. However, the latter always sort counsel from the Lord and was therefore hidden away from Saul’s pursuits.
In the passage above we see that Saul had become tired of being misled by his informants. He told the Ziphites who came to report the whereabout of David to “go and get more information” and to find out where David usually goes and the eye witnesses who see him, because he is informed that DAVID IS VERY CRAFTY. SAUL WANTED DEFINITE INFORMATION NOW.
But Beloved, who is it that has more definite information than our God? Tired of chasing the air to catch David, Saul wanted more evidence from his informants instead of seeking from the Lord whether He approves of this jealousy for or chase of David in the first place. But he wouldn’t, lest he learns wisdom and returns to the palace as a broken man who embarked on a “useless” quest to capture the man after God’s own heart. No, he wouldn’t. He preferred to attribute his inability to lay hands on David to the latter’s craftiness.
David on the other hand was not being crafty at all. His steps were so ordered by the Lord such that he had become like a crafty one in the eyes of those who pursued him. May those who seek your destruction find your life too crafty than they can comprehend. May confusion break out in their camp because they lack the confidence to pursue you again knowing it will be yet another failed quest.
Begin to pray now. Ask that your ears be more inclined to the voice of the Lord so that by obedience, your steps will be ordered and your life hidden away from harm. You will become too crafty for all who by jealousy seek to bring you down. Each chase after you will hit a frustrating dead end, still with no word about your whereabout.
All that while, you will be hidden in Christ Jesus, and He in the Father. Who is it that can ever find you there? Except for trails and hints that you have been where they are but now no where to be found. Yes, too crafty than they can handle. Your God makes you so.
