The Sower, His Seed And The Soil. Part 2

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Sower, His Seed And The Soil! (Self Assessment 67)

Background: This is the concluding part of last week’s discussion on the parable of the Sower. In the study, we identified that seeds that fell on pathways represented anyone who hears the word but does not understand it. The evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their hearts. Seeds that fall on rocky soil represent those who receive the word with joy but have no roots. They last only a short time. When trouble comes because of the world, they quickly fall away.

Today we will delve into the other two kinds of soil that receive the word and how they react to it.

Text: Mat 13: 7- 8, 18, 22-23

7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

“18 Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Amen

Questions:
i. Just to refresh our minds, kindly help us recollect what the seed and its broadcast stand for?

ii. Why is the farmer broadcasting instead of planting directly? Is he not wasting the seed that way?

iii. According to verse 7 & 22, what does the  “thorns” that choke up the plants stand for? Give practical examples or scenarios to explain your point.

iv. According to verse 8 & 23, what does a good soil represent?

v. Why is it that the same seed falling on good soil can yield differently, yielding a hundred, sixty and thirty fold of what was sown? What are the possible factors that makes different people receiving the same word yield different folds of blessings?

vi. Why do you think it is unwise for “good soil believers” yielding less folds to out of envy compare with believers who are yielding much? What do you think will rather be wise for them to do?

vii. Just as a pathway, rocky soil and thorny field can be cleared, prepared and fertilized to become a top yielding good soil, in what practical ways can a believer become a top yielding good soil for Christ?

viii. What have you learnt from today’s discuss?
