Topic: A Passionate Prophet Vrs His Evil King (Part 13)
(Self Assessment 213)

Introduction: The all-merciful Jehovah sent forth fire from heaven to consume Elijah’s sacrifice. The people of Israel have seen for themselves what God has done. They even unanimously fell prostrate saying, “The Lord, He is God”!

What’s going to happen from now on then? Is Israel going to choose Jehovah over baal? If so, what are they going to do with the prophets of baal and Jezebel their patroness?

For answers to these and more, let us zoom straight into today’s Bible study.

Text: 1 Kings 18: 40- 42

40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. Amen

Questions:
1. The bible does not mention, but why in your opinion did Elijah command that the prophets of baal be seized and slaughtered?

2. As we are already aware, there had been no rain at the word of Elijah all that while. However, he asks Ahab the king to go and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.

a) What do you think made Elijah confident that the spiritual atmosphere was now conducive to support rain?

b) How come he declares the sound of heavy rain when there was physically no sign at all of the clouds gathering.

3. Kindly meditate on verse 42 again:

a) How does verse 42a go to prove that Ahab didn’t care much about baal nor his worshippers, except that he allowed Jezebel to use his high office as king, to advance and corrupt all of Israel with her religion and witchcraft?

b) After proclaiming the sound of heavy rain, Elijah now climbs on top of the mountain to pray for “the rain”. Why do you think this is so?

4. What have you learnt from today’s discussion?
