Today’s Devotion
Topic: Against Abortion (Part 1)
Text: Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Can we talk about abortion today? Yes abortion! Is it not the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks?
Exactly! But why does the sound of it send uncomfortable waves through many, especially the youth? Why do we talk less about it now than before although its practice has become more rampant?
You see; the complications surrounding the discussion of abortion generates from the confusion as to the conditions that should qualify a particular pregnancy as unwanted. While most activists argue that the individual has a right to decide whether they are psychologically prepared for a child or not, and hence can terminate any pregnancy they are not ready for; others believe that life begins at conception — making every attempt to terminate a foetus tantamount to murder.
As medical professionals and politicians debate as to which kind of abortion to legalise or otherwise, the youth are already busily engaged in it without remorse or regard for what this law might say. As far as they are concerned, this pregnancy comes at a wrong time and needs to be gotten rid off so that they can go on and fornicate the more until another pregnancy emerges. Obviously, they will terminate that one too. Often too soon before it can be noticed. This cycle continues till they settle down in marriage.
For most of them, the only consideration regarding all this, is whether the abortion done will affect their chances of giving birth later in life or not. That’s all! They really have no concern for what this might seem in the sight of God or what spiritual laws they may be flouting.
But can we blame them much? Certainly not! Gone are the days when ladies requiring abortion, needed a doctor’s appointment to ascertain whether it was even medically safe or not. The whole process required a lot of courage to go through with. Currently, pharmaceutical companies have made it easier: abortion is just a ‘pill’ away and the unborn child is completely destroyed. Also, gone are the days when preachers taught the youth about the virtue of chastity and the value of a human life to God. Lately, the emphasis is on encouraging courtship and not particularly what goes on in there; whiles the sermons across board are on how to make wealth through sowing.
Everyone does whatever seems best for them and hope that God will understand that they are only human.
To this point, no one is asking about the unborn baby yet. Is it a he or a she? Could they be twins or even triplet? Had this unwanted child a destiny too? Though in the womb, was he or she a living being or just an object until birth? What could be God’s plan for his or her life? What if he or she was meant to be the brightest star within his generation? Are we even answerable for cutting his or her life short?
Ponder over these questions while you meditate on the text above. Pray for more insight into God’s divine purpose for a life so that we can apply wisdom in all our engagements. Tomorrow, we will continue by looking at what abortion looks like in the sight of God. Make a date.
