Topic: If You Knew The Gift Of God (Part 4)
Self Assessment (224)
Background:
For the past three weeks, we’ve been studying Jesus’ encounter with a Samaritan woman. Our study last week revealed that it was not the places of worship that made our worship to be acceptable, but the kind of worship that is offered in SPIRIT and in TRUTH?
We want to know what ensued after that deep revelation from Christ and see the lessons we can derive from it. Beloved, let us delve deep into the word of God once again.
Text: John 4:25-26, 28-30
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.” 26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am He”.
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward Him. Amen
Questions
1) Kindly read verse 25 again:
a. Why do you think Jesus’ explanation to the woman’s quest to know where best to worship God triggered in her the desire to know more from the Messiah (Himself) when He comes?
b. What do you think the Samaritan woman meant by saying “When He comes, He will explain everything to us?
c. How does Jesus’ ministry confirm this expectation (ie the expectation of question b.)?
2. “I, the one speaking to you—I am He”. What does this statement of Christ mean and why does He lay much emphasis?
3) Kindly read verse 28 again please:
a. Reflecting on the passage from our contemporary experiences, what do you think “LEAVING HER WATER JAR” may signify for any one who encountered the Living Jesus in our day?
b. This woman immediately rushed back to her people and invited them to encounter Jesus too and attest if He was not the Messiah. Why then has it been so hard for us to witness about the Jesus we have encountered; even to our own people?
4. According to verse 30, the town people came out upon her testimony and made their way to Jesus:
a. How does this tell people’s yearning for a savior?
b. This woman may just as well be an ordinary woman without any prominent status. Why do you think her testimony about Jesus inspired a whole town? How should that inform our decision to share the gospel regardless of our status in society?
5. What have you learnt from today’s discussion?
